We understand that investing in a reliable and quality LED video wall can be a large undertaking. We’ve talked about all the benefits of LED in the long run (check out the blog post here), but how long does it really last? And what can you do to ensure it stays looking new?

The lifespan of LED

In short, LED can last for thousands of hours — most of our LED Panels have a life of up to 100,000 hours, or approximately 10-15 years. These are estimates that depend on the total usage of your video wall, and how well it’s maintained.

On average, LCD walls only last 40-50,000 hours, so you’re gaining double the life over the alternative. Additionally, they’re low in power consumption and don’t output a lot of noise either.

Keep in mind, when LED panels are brand new, they go through what’s called a burn-in period. This is typically 72 hours in the factory, and 48 hours in-house before they’re shipped, in which your LED screen is broken in to ensure it’s ready for you to use. Beyond this time period, it takes about 60-90 days for things to settle down — so don’t be alarmed if any minor maintenance is needed right away.

Ways to ensure your LED lasts long

Environment & protection

So what can you do to increase the longevity of your LED video wall? There are many factors, but one important one is the placement and usage of your video wall. Weather can play a big role, so if you are using an indoor LED screen at your retail storefront, check to see if you get a lot of direct sunlight on the screen. If you do, you’ll have to adjust your screen brightness and contrast, therefore taking up more power consumption and possibly shortening the lifespan.

Generally speaking, environmental conditions are the most crucial part to LED lifespan. With indoor LED, avoiding too many hours of sunlight, high humidity, dust and other conditions will help you maintain your LED screen.

For outdoor LED, it’s important that your panels are rated IP65 for optimal protection from the environment — just like our outdoor LED options.

Cleaning

If you’re cleaning the LED video wall on your own, it’s important to use products and methods that are suitable for your display. For dusting, we recommend just a soft cloth so it’s gentle and non-abrasive.

Furthermore, avoid touching your screen with your fingers when possible (unless it’s setup for touch-screen abilities). The grease and oils from your hands can transfer onto your screen and cause further need for cleaning.

Maintenance & ventilation

When it comes to maintenance, it’s important to note that many of Firefly’s LED panels are front-serviceable — making it super easy and painless to maintain. The flip-chip technology, as seen in the A Series, eliminates broken wires, which is one of the biggest fail points with SMD LEDTechnology. This also allows for a more compact packaging process, which gives us the physical room to focus on heat dissipation, allowing for a brighter and more efficient LED. This also provides a much more reliable and stable product overall, making it the best option in the market today.

Wrapping up

It goes without saying that one of the best methods for helping your LED last long is to turn it off when it’s not in use. The extra usage could help you save valuable hours in the long run for an even longer lifespan.
