The Do’s and Don’ts of Outdoor LED Displays

Firefly LED - Outdoor LED Display - O Series Application

With Spring upon us, and the rising temperatures bringing us gathering outdoors more, it’s the perfect opportunity to explore an outdoor LED display for your business. Never underestimate the effectiveness of what an LED display can do for you, no matter what scale or size of screen.

However, it’s important to ensure you are utilizing your investment properly — here’s our breakdown of the top do’s and don’ts of using (and choosing) an outdoor LED display.

Do: Use LED with proper protection

It’s no question that by having an outdoor LED video wall display, you are naturally placing it at risk for the environmental elements — rain, heat, sun, wind, hail, and sometimes more extreme depending where you’re at.

When you are choosing an outdoor LED panel, you should always make sure it is protected from these elements. At Firefly LED, our outdoor LED displays carry an IP65 protection rating, giving it a full weatherproof coating.

Don’t: Calibrate your screen improperly

Because of the placement of your outdoor display, the calibration of your screen — including brightness, contrast and color — is imperative to ensuring your content is being seen in full sun, or even shade.

If you ignore this major detail, you could simply be wasting your investment on a display that’s not rendering properly to be used in it’s full effectiveness.

Do: Perform regular maintenance

All LED displays require maintenance, and an outdoor display is no exception. The M Series Outdoor LED panel from Firefly LED features a front or rear serviceable panel, so it’s quick and easy to maintain.

Carrying out regular maintenance will also ensure your LED display will last for years to come.

Don’t: Choose the wrong location

Just as we’ve mentioned before with the calibration, placing an LED display in the wrong place can completely defeat it’s purpose. Therefore, thoroughly think through the reason for the screen — what kind of content will you display? What is the main purpose? What are you trying to achieve? How far away will your potential customers be from viewing it?

These questions will help point you in the right direction to knowing exactly where you should place your outdoor LED display.

Do: Be creative with your display

Go all out! You can utilize an outdoor LED video wall in numerous ways — including on corners of buildings to create 3D effects or in unique and custom configurations. There are essentially no limits — if you have an idea, don’t be afraid to think outside the box and really “wow” your viewers. It’s something your customers will definitely remember!

Don’t: Choose the wrong pixel pitch

Your pixel pitch is completely dependent on where you place your outdoor LED display (read more about pixel pitch here).

Placing an outdoor LED video wall high up — like a billboard? You’ll want a much higher pixel pitch.
Is your outdoor LED display viewed more closely? Choose a smaller pixel pitch for a finer, higher resolution picture.
